What’s more romantic than river cruises on the Danube at low cost prices? Easy. A river cruise on the Danube at low cost prices during the Advent to discover the Danube in the charming atmosphere of the Christmas markets.
River cruises on the Danube at low cost prices
The naval companies sailing the Danube are endless and at different prices trending upwards. To get round this and succeed in getting a really incredible and favourable price, it’s enough to get a few tricks and a linguistic adaptability.
Yeah, you have to know the best offers for cruises on the Danube at low cost prices are the German ones for Germans. Of course, the whole personnel on-board speaks flowing English.
Really low cost prices
A 4 days cruise full board (and what a full board!) on the Danube to Austria, Passau- Vienna-Passau, in the “Glucks Kabine” (fortune double-cabin with roulette formula) can cost only 146 Euros all inclusive.
By 18 Euros total you can add a very comfortable car package which include covered car parking, shuttle as far as the port of shipment and luggage delivery service to the cabin.
Cabins at incredible prices
The website www.dreamlines.de is a cruise German website selling all sorts of cruises, not only river cruise: often and above all – as always – in low season you can find really interesting offers. You think once (only once unfortunately!) I came upon a fortune cabin sold at 1Euro!
If you don’t know the German language like me, it will be enough a handy plugin for the translations.
Of course, the tip is always the same: to enrol the newsletter. But keep in mind this cabins are not advertised. You can only find them exploring the website.
Already when you are booking it’s possible to see with your own eyes the helpfulness and the reliability of the staff: by chat or e-mail (in English language) they give us all information we need and let us know – before to book – that the official on-board language is German so they ask us if we are still interested in the purchase.
By a quick international transfer the cruise is ours: of course, we checked before the price and the offer directly on the specific selected company website.
Cruise on the Danube: boarding
We arrive to the car parking-silos and we handle here all boarding formalities. We are requested luggage and get on the shuttle taking us to the harbour. Our suitcases will reach us to the cabin, in the meantime we have still an hour before the boarding to have a tour at Passau Christmas market, which rises a few steps from the ship.
Finally at 4pm (useless to say the punctuality is de rigueur!) we go on board where we are given our cabin’s key.
The cabin has even the balcony
Here we have the first surprise ahead of us. We find out to our great joy the cabin is on the highest deck and has a French balcony. Do you know how I love the possibility to have a balcony in the cabin, don’t you? Do you remember about our cruise to the Bahamas?
Just the time to see the cabin and immediately we go discovering the ship. Remember in the river cruise don’t exist inner cabins without porthole or balcony, so the fortune cabin’s purchase is certainly the top.
Relax areas and sauna during navigation
You can imagine our astonishment and our joy when we find out in the lower part – in part under the level water – there’s a little relax area with a comfortable sauna which can house 8 people, on whole day.
On board life starts with the welcome cocktail party and the relevant welcome of the captain who then gives “the word” to the piano bar.
The navigation is slow and calm, however we are on a river. Even though the temperature definitely cold we go to find out the open deck where (during Spring and Summer) are available beds and deckchairs.
The meals on board are worthy of a 4 stars hotel strictly served at the table with a wide choice of refined meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes in lavish portions.
A way-through in the dikes
We arrive at our first dike: it’s almost night, it’s snowing and the cold makes itself felt but we cannot miss certainly the view of the water increasing with us.
Manoeuvrings of this so low and so long ship are incredible: water rises even 9-10 metres, the bullheads are closed and an enormous quantity of water is input lifting the ship before “imprisoned” in the cement box where it is put in, then floating at the level of the surrounding landscape.
What a charming view! At the end of the cruise we find out to have crossed 9 dikes.
Keep in mind in this type of cruise it’s not like the usual ones you usually think about: here all slips by with the calm Danube times.
Life on board
Life on board is relaxing, the musical entertainment is almost always present but in the background.
In the afternoon at tea time almost three different types of cakes, accompanied by tea or coffee are ahead of us every day.
In the evening after dinner every day there’s a different surprise: once the midnight snack, other time the cakes’ selection, another one the gluhwein (mulled wine) which is always appreciated with these temperatures!
Always all-inclusive, of course.
Arrival in Vienna and tour of the markets and the town
In the afternoon of the second day of navigation, we arrive at the berth in Vienna. By a comfortable tram we reach the town centre for the tour of Wien’s market, the atmosphere here is one of the best.
Christmas lights and flavours welcome us in the shadow of the huge Ancient Town Hall and hours slip by cold and nice. In the evening when we come back, the usual mulled wine mug waits for us to retemper us.
At the night we start the return voyage which will take us to stop again for the tour of Linz market and its old town.
In the last evening we are offered the full dress dinner with the captain: even more refined and elegant and served as we were nobles. Whole wonderfully harmonious and nice, however with quite informal dresses.
We are also introduced the personnel which has accompanied us in these days: from dinning room waiters to the personnel who cares the cabins (two times a day the cabin is tidied, in the morning for the day and in the evening for the night), to the hostess and everyone which helped with their work to the realization of this voyage which has a really magic savour.
What else from these river cruise on the Danube at low cost prices?
In the night before to sleep, relaxed in our bed we watch the river edge running in front of us like in a film, as if it moves slowly in the slow motion.
Each cabin has a TV: besides the usual channels is linked to the webcam at ship’s bow. It’s useless to say it was the channel always on in our cabin!
The sweet waters of Danube which alternate colours and landscapes leave in the heart a sweet and romantic memory, which pushes us to think: how can be the Donau (the Danube) in Spring?
