Have you ever heard mention about the Stuttgart Oktoberfest, the beer festival?
Everybody knows the very famous beer festival in Munich. So, after have told you about the much little known Spring Oktoberfest, here they are a few useful tips about another German treasure.
Stuttgart Oktoberfest opens the doors
Last Friday during the opening ceremony at 8.15 pm the mayor of Stuttgart by opening the first beer’s cask and by broaching started the Cannstatter Volksfest, known as the Stuttgart Oktoberfest: it will welcome the brewers until October 11th.
There will be also actors dressed with the traditional and coloured local costumes, folk music and comic little scenes.
It’s the second beer festival after the Munich Oktoberfest.
A very big popular festival taking place every year. It took place for the first time in 1816 after a long and heavy famine which oppressed Stuttgart: the King Wilhelm I and the Queen Katharina decided to call a festival for the new crop in the meadows near the town.
You think the first festival lasted a whole day welcoming 30.000 people! So, from that moment tradition was born and today thousands of Germans meet to celebrate the good cuisine, the good folk music but above all the good beers of Stuttgart.
Unlike the Oktoberfest in Munich, here never arrive many foreign tourists so it will be a real full immersion. It will allow you to enjoy the festival and the German traditions. It will be very difficult to meet some Italian people.
The crop tower
The traditional popular festival starts with the crop tower, decorated along its 26m dictated by plenty with 3 ton fruit. The broaching is accompanied by the parade with traditional costumes and lots of folk music.
As it happens during every popular German festival (Germans live it as a meeting point, a bit like we live the village festivals), also here enormous big tents decorated finely make a fine show: each of them serves its own and distinctive beer.
The main and most crowded big tents are Sonja Merz and Klaus and Klaus tents but the “little” ones offer highly respected beer and gastronomic specialties.
Admittance to the big tents is always free. The only limit is the capacity in case of crowding. But if you consider that every big tent guests from 3.500 to 6.000 regular customers, only on Saturday evening can be the risk to find the doors temporary closed.
The beer wagons parade
On the first Sunday of the festival the traditional luxuriously decorated beer wagons, the music groups and the choirs from the whole region file in a happy and joyful atmosphere.
Under the big tents (7 enormous pavilions) there are about 320 stands offering food and beverage: the beer runs in floods next to traditional gastronomic specialties and non-stop music.
The festival lasts three weeks and the location is the Wasen fair district: here on the 37 hectares along the Neckar River there’s also a huge Luna Park, besides tents, wine, several snack bars and even much more to satisfy everyone.
I recommend a tour at the Luna Park.
In this case don’t think about those ones you find at our village festivals.
These ones are really new merry-go-round and every year different attractions alternate.
A real paradise for people who love adrenaline.
In a furthest and peaceful position takes place the market where you can go shopping and walk in a calmer and more relaxing environment.
The offer is so varied: from jewellery to the leather items, from the spices to the home decorations put on the stalls with a masterly skill: I’m dying for taking home everything!
When to go
Remember that on Mondays there is the senior tag, it means the half price day dedicated to seniors.
On Wednesdays there is the family tag, the day with 50% off dedicated to families until 6pm (children on pushchairs only until 4pm). The big tents are crowded with parents and children with services and shows dedicated to them and the sale of soft drinks.
From 6pm on, admittance is only for adults.
On Sundays there is the day of the historical appointments, the historical reconstructions, the parades of breweries and everything which is show.
