If you are going to plan a tour at Neuschwanstein Castle and environs, you have to consider above all that it is the most visited monument in the whole Germany.
Realized by the King Ludwig II of Bavaria it is a dream castle in a unique position, become by now the symbol of Bavaria and perhaps of the whole Germany.
Its architecture is so charming that it made even Disney fall in love with it: today every park has one! Did you remember ours at EuroDisney in Paris?
Tour at Neuschwanstein castle and environs
Neuschwanstein Castle is in Fussen and it’s easily reachable from Italy.
Planning a tour at Neuschawanstein Castle and environs it means don’t miss what the area has to offer. It’s a very beautiful area from the point of view of the landscape, set among mountains and lakes with breathtaking panoramic views.
The tour at Neuschawanstein Castle is organized with the usual German efficiency: when you buy the tickets you are given the timetable to follow strictly. The audio guides in Italian language are available.
Inside the castle you discover a world and you enter the magic and the madness of Ludwig II – we have to tell it.
On one side his obsession for loneliness: he surrounded himself with all sorts of comforts, precious inlaid works and pleasures, but he didn’t want to see anyone, not even the servants for lunch and everything happened through mechanisms and automatisms.
On the other side the obsession for beauty and the unbounded love for Wagner and his works which were prepared only for him and also the hard-won relationship with the artist. We cannot talk about Ludwig II without mention the swan: everything around him recalled this animal.
Not last the obsession for comforts: the castle was at the avant-garde for that time. It had running water, the heating in the kitchens, many technological solutions which were put perfectly in the sumptuous style furniture.
Then other curious aspects of his life: the mad king than madder isn’t possible…had built this wonderful castle with the private money and without touch the public property!
Other tours and castles not to miss
If you are going to plan a tour at Neuschwanstein Castle and environs don’t miss above all the near Hohenschwangau Castle, Ludwig II father residence, which can be visited, too.
At less than 50 km we meet the Linderhof Castle, other residence to discover with sumptuous furniture, the caves as personal theatre for Wagner’s performances inside which Ludwig II made rock on a boat.
Here, too, there are several legends of loneliness that swallow him.
Useful tips: there are several privileged points to take photos of Neuschawanstein Castle. Everyone knows Maria Bridge but few people go as far as the opposite direction where the carway goes up.
The photos of the castle you can take from up there, above all in winter with snow, are unique!

In Germany, despite what Italian people often think, you eat very well. Don’t miss the local specialties, maybe going away a bit from the town centre and the castle.
To plan your overnight stay you can do like we did and booking nothing from Italy.
So it will happen to sleep in a zimmer found in a flash in the evening, entering the room and finding this view in front of the windows.
Both castles are lighted in a masterly manner and admiring them by night is ravishing.
By day, too, the view isn’t less but the top is reached at sunset!
If you are not enough daring and above all if you decide to visit it in high-season, during a particular long holiday, in spring or in a crowded period anyway, I advise you to book in advance your accommodation choosing among the many available of all levels.
A tour absolutely recommended and very interesting for adults and children. You won’t be certainly disappointed!
