Do you have always thought the vacations by snowmobile are only fit for sportsmen and daredevils? Would you like to rent a snowmobile in Canada or in the USA but you think it’s difficult, very expensive and stuff for twenty years old people? You’re totally wrong! That’s why!
Vacations by snowmobile: what a passion!
Over our long on the road between the USA and Canada we have had the chance to experience wonderful vacations by snowmobile. Whether you want to do it for a day, for a few days, for a week or more, follow my tips and you’ll find out there’s nothing better, easier and funnier than to run about through the trails onboard your fast snowmobile.
Don’t you believe it? Read this post, too, as regards our experience about renting in Finland!
Above all why does right here? Well, there are several reasons. In the collective imaginary Canada is a synonym of great spaces and uncontaminated nature.
The whole area at the border between the United States and Canada is scattered with complexes organized at the best to make your vacations by snowmobile really unforgettable. It won’t be difficult to find them: they all have a line of snowmobiles outside like in this photo!
In Canada we rented at Rivière-du-Loup our vacations by snowmobile. It’s amazing to admire the chalet skirted by the trails and then go towards the inside in the less well-trodden areas.
Then we discovered, always by a do-it-yourself way, an area practically not crowded by the international tourism as well as the European one. We are in Old Forge, in the New York State.
The area kept its “character”, since it is quite inconvenient to reach touch and go from New York.
Here there’s a local tourism, these areas are not for V.I.P. vacations, so it’s certainly an area fit for us who never love too advertised and famous destinations. Furthermore, these are the places where the low-cost is one of the family, of course.
How much do the vacations by snowmobile cost?
Of course, vacations by snowmobile isn’t cheap but also here there are many different possibilities and many ways to save.
If you’ll turn to an agency for the organization, there are many ones trustable and with programs for every need. Obviously the work has to be paid and the amount, above all if you’ll decide to be accompanied by a guide, will rise inevitably but clearly you won’t to think about anything.
What people often don’t know is that in Canada and in the USA the vacations by snowmobile can be organized by a do-it-yourself way without any problem.
The amounts vary a lot according to the place, so my tip is to check all of them. It will be enough to use Google Maps and digit “rental snowmobile” when you’ll be in the area to get immediately websites, telephone numbers, position, prices and every useful info. On the contrary, to plan everything in advance don’t forget to use Google Trips!
The best period for the vacations by snowmobile
The best season is the Spring, in February-March, when the days are drawing out allowing many hours of lights and the thick snow blanket has covered abundantly the landscape,. But keep in mind that already from December (sometimes even before, according to the weather) the trails are opened.
Checking everything is very easy. Don’t you believe it? Try to digit “snowmobile trail”: it’s incredible the number of results, websites, apps and the references available to know the situation of the trails in real time, the snow conditions, the weather and all the rest!
Why does right in the New York State?
The main reason is…quite incredible. Right in the New York State we found out a particular law that immediately made Valeria fall in love with. We stopped at a rental store to get info and amounts: the person in charge asks us if we want to rent 2 or 3 snowmobiles. Valeria starts laughing saying she is only 14. The guy answers to her that here the snowmobiles can be driven over 10 years old.
You can imagine Valeria’s face and astonishment hearing those words.
Actually, then he explains to us that a 10 years old child can drive alone only if he has the temporary driving licence. Of course, she doesn’t have it since she’s Italian. But as she’s 14 years old she can drive it if on the same snowmobile there’s an adult. Probably if she has had our light motorcycle temporary driving licence she could have driven it alone. I’m sure in this moment I have a new problem!
We go out. Meanwhile Valeria keeps jumping for the joy for the news just known. She thinks and thinks again about it and once the euphoria has cooled down, she starts to repeat that’s impossible. That everywhere, from Canada as far as Finland, people have to be 18 years old and must have the driving licence, that in the rest of the world is like that. That 10 years old is too less, that certainly the guy was wrong.
When we stopped at the filling station Valeria sees a police car. She gets off and runs towards the policeman. They chat a bit and after a few minutes she comes back satisfied and determined: we cannot absolutely leave the New York State since the policeman has confirmed to her that the law is right but he also added that, to his knowledge, the law is applied only here in this state.
“I certainly cannot miss a such opportunity! Even the weather forecasts expect a sunny day tomorrow. Everything’s perfect, isn’t it?” Her usually luck!
By now we have decided. Tomorrow we are going to rent the snowmobile here!
We are at the store almost half an hour before the opening. Valeria doesn’t want to be late. After have got through the formalities and signed the contract in a flash (here they are very quick besides to have a “only” 500 dollars per snowmobile allowance frozen amount on the card – on the contrary in all other places we ran into until now, Canada included, they are 2/3000 $), we go out to collect the snowmobiles.
I always say to you that the low cost can be just around the corner!
The amounts (you can look at them directly on the several websites offering the rental) include also the third-party insurance and the heath-care one with an allowance relatively moderate. So, no problem if your health-care insurance for the USA and Canada doesn’t cover a such sport.
What’s better than driving a snowmobile?
That’s easy. Driving a super-performing snowmobile in a clear sunny day on almost desert trails, sighting many animals, at the mountain, with steep slopes, full of little bumps and jumps where you can have a stream of performances.
Ski is certainly good but the snowmobile is always the top among the tops to me! There’s no competition! What’s the only real problem if you travel with your own teenager children? That today I have driven too less MY snowmobile!
Then my daughter in the middle of the day at my umpteenth refusal to exchange while she was driving, she turns to me and asks me: “Mum, but don’t you like the snowmobile anymore? Do you have enough of driving it?”
Well, in that moment she has really taken a big risk. If I didn’t strangled her that’s just because I really love her very much!!! But really very much!!!
Speed for over 10-12 uninterrupted hours on the snow-covered trails among forests, lakes, deviations not present on the map and endless straights. Don’t meet anybody for hours. The sense of freedom these boundless spaces give has to be tried!
Nature shows itself at the best behind every corner and the blue sky reflects in every water mirror more or less iced. When it’s getting dark the snow-covered trails become pure magic. The silence around, the light of the snowmobile and it, the Northern Lights in the sky exploding in all its own beauty!!!
Together with the snowmobile you are given the maps of the area, often with the indications of the trails’ difficulty. Furthermore, the filling station, the restaurants, the cafés and the “snowmobile friendly” hotels are indicated, too. They are those ones where you can arrive directly to the hotel by snowmobile and often offer the watched over parking.
Many trails often run parallel to the road. It’s impossible to get lost. However thee are thousands of apps both in the United States and in Canada, entirely dedicated to the snowmobiles reporting also trails and snow conditions in real time.
The road signals are very simple and have to be respected strictly. If an area is forbidden to snowmobiles, it’s a private property or it exists any other kind of prohibition, you mustn’t pass by there: maybe the lake or the stream under is not quite iced to support the weight, yet.
If it’s the first time you rent a snowmobile don’t exaggerate: after have driven on difficult trails and over 10-12 hours, in the evening you can have all the arms and shoulders’ muscles aching and it could be difficult to start again the following day.
Don’t worry about cold: practically all the complexes rent also clothes at affordable prices: big snowsuits, crash helmet, gloves and boots. It will be enough to buy the under crash helmet, for reason of hygiene, that you will use every time.
What’s the most beautiful thing? The encounters with really many animals that, by now used to the passage of snowmobiles, are not disturbed anymore and get close allowing wonderful shots!
Now we go search for the elk. Do you come with us?
