It’s enough few hours by car from Boston northwards to reach Campobello Island in Canada.
West Quoddy Lighthouse, with its red stripes and its a bit creepy horn, it’s the last lighthouse you run into in Lubec, Maine, before leaving the United States to enter Canada.
Just crossed the bridge connecting it to the mainland, there’s another very beautiful and very famous lighthouse welcoming us. Certainly you have seen it in some photos!
Important lighthouses helping navigation
Mulholland lighthouse, with its whiteness, offers a very beautiful landscape and it’s an ideal place, in Summer, for a pick nick with a view on Lubec city, admiring the boats travelling calm.
The island is reachable only through this panoramic bridge (you need your passport to cross it), which cross a strip of sea with very strong draughts.
In summer there’s also a ferry-boat connecting the Campobello Island to Canada.
Campobello is off the easternmost city of the United States, just near there, in a mix of continuity and border which makes it so particular: arrived to the customs, when people ask “how long do you stay in Canada?”, it makes laugh the spontaneous answer…like…4 or 5 hours!
We reach it in a cold windy morning in the depth of winter: certainly, it’s a place that in Summer gives its own best. But we like this desolation which is peace and contact with a land which is very enjoyable with sun, and hard and solitary in cold seasons.
Campobello is one of the three islands of the Fundy Bay and, even if belongs to Canada, it’s nearer to the Maine coast than to the mainland of Canada.
What to do and what to see in Campobello Island
What does it offer? Breathtaking views, uncontaminated nature, excursionist paths, a tour to the Roosevelt’s summer residence for people who loves history, rest and relax.
Of course, lobsters everywhere (together with the tourism, they are one of the main source of income) besides two wonderful lighthouses.
It’s the gate for a holiday in two states and it offers the possibility to stay inside really green parks where to practice outdoor activities: bike, canoe, kayak…there’s also an adrenaline zip line!
The land is very harsh, fogs are thick and frequent for a good part of the year, the movement of the tides is important and the sea has dangerous rocks.
All this causes and caused above all in the past, several difficulties to the inhabitants.
Head Harbour Light
Still today natural risks for navigation are considerable and only the realization of the Lighthouses (one of them, Head Harbour Light, is one of the most ancient of Canada, with its 150 year of activity) allowed to make easier the movements through the sea and offer help to voyagers.
You think we are in the American continent area nearest to Europe: hereabout at one time the ships coming from Ireland arrived.
The island is about little 20 km long and, arrived over there, here it is the rock’s spur, dominated by the lighthouse, that with the high tide becomes an island.
It’s possible to reach the lighthouse only on foot in the good season, with the low tide, but you need to inquire and know the tide table.
A curious issue: the red cross on the lighthouse’s body was realized to distinguish the lighthouse from the surrounding environment in the fog and in the snow.
Bird watching and whale watching
The island is full of wild birds and it’s a migratory point for really many species. This thing made the tourism increased and the bird watching lovers here find, in some period of the year, one of the best places for the bird watching.
It’s a very famous destination in Summer for the whale watching. The whole coast from Boston it is.
Here you can sight whales, besides by classic boats, also by sailing boat (closing up without engine, so without disturbing the animals), by catamaran, on board cruises and mini-cruises and even on board Zodiac.
It costs between 20 and 60 Canadian dollars, it depends on the solution and the duration. So an absolutely low cost price.
Do you remember our wonderful experience at Svalbard on board Zodiac in the Arctic, don’t you?
In Summer the New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Ottawa and Montreal inhabitants run out the great town and they escape this paradise with their yachts, transforming an extreme place into a society destination crowded by V.I.P.
Actually the island is famous for shopping, too.
A not to miss stage is the Herring Cove Provincial Park: it offers a very large sand beach and it’s possible to play golf, camping, walking on really many paths for the excursionists…in short, it’s easy to make envelop by the magic of this island!
Then Roosvelt Park is one-of-a-kind place: here Roosevelt spent many nice holidays in his summer residence which is available for visits today. A wonderful dwelling house which will bewitch also who doesn’t love history particularly.
In Campobello you can rent one of the many wonderful cottages in calm and wonderful places on the sea, where to enjoy a cocktail in the evening and to be swallowed by a relaxing and nice atmosphere. It will look like living in a film.
It’s all very easy and prices are really affordable.
These are the websites with the complete list of the available cottages:
Now there is nothing left to do but say to you…have a good holiday in Campobello!
